Description
Help children build confidence with fractions through hands-on, visual learning. This wooden Fractions Board allows children to explore fraction concepts by manipulating and comparing pieces, making abstract ideas easier to understand. Perfect for homeschool families, classroom math centres, and Montessori-inspired learning environments.
Commonly used from Grade 3 to Grade 4 (Ages 8 to 9+) but adaptable depending on learning level
What’s included:
-Fractions Board
-2 sets of 1-8 square numbered pieces
-Fraction pie pieces: (1/2 x 2), (1/3 x 3), (1/4 x 4), (1/5 x 5), (1/6 x 6), (1/7 x 7), (1/8 x 8)
What the Child will learn:
🍕 Understanding fractions as parts of a whole
Children learn how fractions represent equal parts of a whole through visual and hands-on exploration.
⚖️ Comparing and ordering fractions
Develop confidence identifying larger and smaller fractions and understanding their relationships.
🧮 Equivalent fractions
Explore how different fractions can represent the same value, such as 1/2 and 2/4.
🔢 Fraction vocabulary and notation
Build familiarity with numerators, denominators, and common fraction terminology.
🧠 Problem-solving and mathematical reasoning
Encourages children to investigate patterns, relationships, and multiple solutions.
👁️ Visual math understanding
Transforms abstract fraction concepts into concrete steps children can see and manipulate.

How to Play
How to Play
1. Before starting, identify the three main parts of the set:
The Control Board: The main wooden base.
The Number Tiles: Square pieces used to set the "Numerator" (top) and "Denominator" (bottom).
The Fraction Slices: Wedge-shaped pieces labeled with fractions like 1/2, 1/4, 1/5, etc.
2. Basic Use:
a) Building a Single Fraction
This is the best way to start for beginners.
Set the Denominator: Pick a number (e.g., 4) and place it in the bottom square slot. This tells the child the circle is divided into 4 equal parts.
Set the Numerator: Pick a number (e.g., 1) and place it in the top square slot.
Fill the Circle: Find the matching wooden slices (the ones labeled 1/4) and place one slice into the large circle.
Visualize: The board now shows that the written fraction 1/4 equals exactly one-quarter of the physical circle.
b) Game for practice : “The Identity Match” (Beginner)
This game helps the child connect the physical piece to its written fraction.
The Setup: Place three 1/4 slices in the large circle.
The Task: Ask the child to pick the matching numerator and denominator tiles and place them in the appropriate slots (eg. 3/4)"
The Goal: Recognizing numerator and denominator and creating a fraction that matches the slices on the board.
3. Intermediate Use:
a) Understanding "The Whole"
Use the board to show that when the numerator and denominator are the same, you have a complete circle.
Place a 4 in both the top and bottom slots.
Have the child add 1/4 slices one by one until the circle is full.
Count them out: "One-fourth, two-fourths, three-fourths, four-fourths... that makes one whole!"
b) ”The Pizza Party" (Addition)
This teaches that fractions are just parts added together.
The Setup: Place a 4 in the denominator (bottom) slot and leave the numerator (top) empty.
The Task: Place two 1/4 slices in the circle. Ask: "We have two pieces in the circle. Which number should go in the top box to show how much 'pizza' we have?"
The Goal: Understanding that the numerator represents the count of the pieces currently on the board.
3. Advanced Use:
a) The Perfect Fit
You can show that different fractions can occupy the same amount of space.
Place the 1/2 slice in the circle.
Ask the child: "Can you fill the rest of the circle using different pieces?"
They might find that two 1/4 pieces fit perfectly into the remaining half.
The Lesson: You can then change the number tiles to show that 2/4 is the same size as 1/2.
Pro-Tips for Parents/Teachers:
Vocabulary: Use the terms Numerator (top/how many parts we have) and Denominator (bottom/how many parts make a whole) consistently to help them stick.
