Description

Help children build confidence with fractions through hands-on, visual learning with this Fractions Circles Set. By exploring fraction “pie pieces,” children can visually see how fractions are formed, compared, and combined to make a whole. Children can also physically explore equivalent fractions, compare sizes, and develop a deeper understanding of how fractions relate to one another, decimals, percentages, angles. Perfect for homeschool families, classroom math centres, and Montessori-inspired learning environments.

Commonly used from Grade 3 to Grade 4 (Ages 8 to 9+) but adaptable depending on learning level

What’s included:
-1 Fraction Conversion Ring
-1 Decimal Conversion Ring
-1 Percent Conversion Ring
-1 Angle Conversion Ring
-Fractions slices from 1/2 - 1/10 (total 54 slices)

What the Child will learn:

🍕 Understanding fractions as parts of a whole
Builds a strong foundation by showing how a whole can be divided into equal parts of a circle.

🧮 Equivalent fractions
Helps children recognize that different fractions can represent the same value, such as 1/2 and 2/4.

📏 Fraction size and comparison skills
Develops an intuitive understanding of how different fractions compare in size.

🔄 Fractions, decimals, percentages, and angles relationships
Build early understanding of how fractions connect to decimals and percentages, helping children see that these are different ways of representing the same value.

🧠 Problem-solving and mathematical thinking
Encourages exploration, reasoning, and pattern recognition through hands-on learning.

👁️ Visual understanding of math concepts
Makes abstract fraction ideas concrete through visual and tactile manipulation.

✍️ Focus and concentration skills
Supports sustained attention and persistence through hands-on, screen-free learning.

How to Play

1. Choose Your "Base Language"
Pick one of the four circular conversion rings to start your activity:
Fraction Ring: Visualizes parts of a whole.
Decimal Ring: Marked from 0 to 1.0.
Percent Ring: Marked from 0% to 100%.
Angle Ring: Marked from 0° to 360°.

2. The "Halfway" Landmark
Place a 1/2 wedge into your chosen ring. Look at the scale to see its "other names":
On the Percent Ring, it sits at 50%.
On the Angle Ring, it reaches exactly 180°.
On the Fraction Ring it shows 1/2
On the Decimal Ring it read 0.5

3. Build the Same Space (Equivalence)
Now, remove the 1/2 wedge and try to fill that exact same space using different combinations of smaller pieces:
Try this: Fit three 1/6 pieces, five 1/10 pieces, or two 1/4 pieces into that half-circle.
The "Aha!" Moment: If they fill the same physical area, they represent the same value. You’ve just proven that 3/6, 5/10, and 2/4 all equal 1/2!

4. Cross-Ring Translation
Keep your custom group of pieces together and move the entire "slice" between the four rings. You will see your combination point to its equivalent decimal (0.5), percentage (50%), and angle (180°) every time.

5. Build to a Whole
Fill any ring perfectly to create a "Whole". Use a mix of any sizes (like a 1/2, a 1/4, and two 1/8 pieces) to reach the 1.0, 100%, or 360° mark.

6. Discover Equivalencies
Use the rings to find "matches." For example, place two 1/4 wedges on top of a 1/2 wedge. Since they are the same size, the student can visually see that 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2. Do this for multiple wedges.

Learning Activities for Parents and Teachers

The "Whole" Race: Give your students or child a specific ring and see how many different combinations of wedges they can use to reach the 100% or 1.0 mark. (ex: 1 x 1/4 wedge, 2 x 1/8 wedges, 3 x 1/6 wedges)

The "Parts" Race: Call out a percent or decimal (eg. 0.75 or 75%), and see how fast your students or child can use a combination of wedges to reach that spot on the ring. In this case 3 x 1/4 wedges, or 1 x 1/2 wedge and 1 x 1/4 wedge.

The "Secret Identity" Game: Place a wedge face-down in the Percent Ring (e.g., at the 25% mark). Ask your student or child to guess which fraction wedge will fit perfectly in that spot (the 1/4 piece). This can be translated across the different Rings.

The Recipe Build: Challenge your student child to "cook" a whole circle using at least three different sizes of wedges. This helps them understand that a "Whole" can be made of many different parts.

Speed Translation: Call out a value (like "75%!") and see how fast they can find the pieces to fill that space on the Percent Ring and then move them to the Decimal Ring to find the matching 0.75.
