How to Play
How to Play
1. The Core Objective
The goal is to create a continuous chain of dominoes by connecting a side featuring an equation (e.g., 10 - 5) to a side featuring the correct numerical answer (e.g., 5).
2. Solo Play
The Start: Pick any domino at random and place it in the center of your workspace.
The Solve: Look at the two ends of that domino. One side will have a number (the solution), and the other will have a math problem (the equation).
The Match: Search through the remaining pile to find a piece that connects.
If you are matching a solution: Find an equation that equals that number (e.g., if the board shows 7, look for 10 - 3 or 6 + 1).
If you are matching an equation: Solve the problem and find the domino with that numerical answer (e.g., for 9 - 4 find the number 5).
Advanced Matching: You can also match two equations directly if they share that same answer. For example, connecting 9 - 3 to 3 to 4 + 2 because they both equal 6. This equivalent solutions math encourages kids to visualize the value of the equation that than just reading the numbers on the tiles.
3. Competitive Play: For 2+ Players
If friends want to join in, use these "Standard Domino" rules:
The Deal: Each player draws 5 to 7 random pieces.
The Draw Pile: Leave the remaining pieces face down in a "boneyard" or draw pile.
Gameplay: Players take turns placing a matching piece onto either end of the chain.
The Penalty: If a player cannot make a match, they must draw one piece from the boneyard. If that piece matches, they can play it immediately; otherwise, their turn ends.
Winning: The first player to run out of dominoes is the winner.
Twist: If a player can match an equation directly to another equation (e.g., connecting 7 - 2 to 3 + 2), they have made an "Equivalent Match" because both sides equal 4, that player gets to immediately play an extra domino from their hand.
4. Solo Mastery Games
To keep solo play fresh, try these variations:
a) The Speed Run: Set a timer for 2 minutes (or any length of time). See how many pieces you can correctly link before the time runs out.
b) Equation Search: Place a single number (like 9) and ask the child to find all the different equations in the set that equal that number.
5. Games for Group Play
a)” Math Domino War"
A fast-paced game for two players that tests quick mental math.
The Setup: Hand out 20 pieces per player.
The Play: On the count of three, both players flip over their top domino.
The Goal: Players must quickly solve the equation on their opponent's domino. The first person to shout out the correct answer for their opponent's piece wins both dominoes.
Winning: The player with the most dominoes at the end of the stacks wins!
b) “Cooperative Tower of Power"
A non-competitive game that encourages communication and teamwork.
The Setup: Lay all dominoes face up so everyone can see them.
The Play: As a group, players must work together to build the longest "snake" possible using every single piece in the set.
The Twist: Players must take turns, but they can "coach" each other. For example, if a player is stuck on a subtraction problem like 7 - 3, another player can help them find the matching 5 tile or a 3 + 2 equation.
d) “Speed Relay” Groups
Great for a larger group or classroom setting.
1.Divide the 60 dominoes into two even piles of 30 pieces each and divide students into two equal teams.
2. Place two "Starter" dominoes at one end of the room where the teams are lined up.
3.Place the two piles of 29 remaining dominoes at the other end of the room.
4. On "Go," the first player from each team looks at the "Starter" piece and runs to the other end to find a piece that matches.
The Match: They must correctly connect their domino to the starter piece. This can be a number-to-equation match or an equivalent equation match.
5. Once the piece is placed, they run back and tag the next teammate. If a runner realizes their piece doesn't match either end of the chain, they must run back, swap it for a different one, and try again.
e) Human Dominos
1. Divide students in two groups. Each student takes a piece of domino from the pile up front and joins their team.
2. On "Go", each student must find their pair (another student holding a matching equation or number) and stand beside them. Each team continues until everyone is lined up.
3. First team to use all their pieces wins.
4. Student can have max of 2 chances to go back to the pile and change their domino piece if they can't find a match.
