Description
Help children understand how numbers are made up of parts with this hands-on Parts of a Whole learning board. Designed to build strong number sense as children can visually explore how numbers are made up of different combinations of parts by manipulating beans, beads, or counters (not included). Perfect for elementary school, homeschool, daycares and Montessori-inspired learning environments.
Commonly used from Kindergarten to Grade 1 (Ages 5 to 6+) but adaptable depending on learning level
What’s included:
-Parts of a Whole Board
-One set of 1-20 Whole Discs
-Two sets of 1-20 Part Discs
What will the Child learn?
🧮 Part–part–whole number relationships
Children learn that every number (the “whole”) can be made up of different combinations of two parts.
🔢 Decomposing and Recomposing quantities
Build understanding of how numbers can be broken apart and recombined in multiple ways (e.g., 6 = 4 + 2, 3 + 3).
📐Using concrete materials to show ways to make up to 10
Solve situations involving addition and subtraction to 10 using concrete materials
💡Perceptual and Conceptual subitizing
Estimate the number of objects in small collections and check by counting. Eg. I can see 5, I can see 4 and 1
🧠 Problem-solving skills
Encourage logical thinking and independent learning.
👁️ Visual math understanding
Transform abstract concepts into meaningful, hands-on experiences that are easier for children to grasp.

How to Play
How to Play
1. Set Your Target (The Whole)
Choose a whole underlined number disc (e.g., 6) and place it into the top circular slot labeled "Whole." This is your total target number.
2. Count Out the Pieces
Count out physical objects (like the beans shown in the pictures, or beads/buttons) to match that number and place them inside the large "Whole" circle.
3. Decompose (Break it Apart)
Slide all the objects from the "Whole" circle down the paths into the two smaller "Part" circles. You can split them however you like—for example, if you have 6 beans, you could put 4 in one side and 2 in the other.
4. Label the Parts
Find the smaller number discs that match the groups you just made. Place the "4" disc in the left corner slot and the "2" disc in the right corner slot (as pictured).
5. Verify and Reverse
To check your work, push all the beans from the "Part" circles back up into the "Whole." If the number of beans still matches the top disc, you've successfully solved the bond!
6. Find New Combinations
Challenge yourself to find a different way to make the same "Whole." Can you make 6 using 3 and 3? What about 5 and 1?
7. The "Build-Up" Method
Fill the Parts First: Start by choosing two smaller number discs (the "Parts") and place them in the bottom corner slots.
Count Your Groups: Place the matching number of objects (beans, beads, or counters) into each of the two bottom "Part" circles.
Combine to Create: Slide all the objects from both "Part" circles up the wooden paths into the large top "Whole" circle.
Find the Total: Count the total number of objects now sitting in the "Whole" circle. Find the underlined number disc that matches this total and place it in the top slot to complete your number bond!
Educational Tips for Parents and Teachers:
The "Missing Part" Game: Place the "Whole" (e.g., 10) and only one "Part" (e.g., 7). Ask the child to figure out what the missing number disc must be to make the bond work.
Addition & Subtraction Prep: This board is the physical foundation for 4 + 2 = 6 and 6 - 4 = 2. Using it builds "number sense" before they ever pick up a pencil.
